CHILD PROTECTION POLICY It is the duty of all people involved in sporting activities with young children, that we all consider the protection of children playing sport or while being coached. We all have a duty to ensure that children are not placed at risk in any way.Unfortunately these days, we must also consider safe practice with regard to other potential risks such as child abuse, security and vulnerability. It is sad to have to make these recommendations, but sport is not immune to society's problems. These recommendations are for advice and guidance. Children should never be left alone with one adult - the risks are two way.Where it is appropriate to work one to one, make sure that others are within earshot and also vision. Adults should never give lifts to children alone. Never touch a young person in a way that could be misconstrued. Never make suggestive or salacious remarks in the presence of young people. If you suspect that a young person is developing a "crush" on you, discuss it with other adults. Similarly, if you notice one of your colleagues at risk, have a word with him or her. Do not rely upon your good name to protect you. Do not, for one moment, believe, "It could never happen to me". Never take the chance. Where there is a mixed group of young people always ensure that there is also a mixed group of adults.
Harrow Sports Council has produced these guidelines so that other sports organisations, may also use them.
